the Phillies announced that Ryne Sandberg will be joining their coaching staff for the 2013 season as their third base coach. Sandberg has of course been the manager of the IronPigs for the past two seasons, leading them to their first ever playoff appearance in 2011 and lifting them out of the dark days that were the Dave Huppert Era. He leaves the Valley with a 155-132 regular season record that has inched the Pigs just a little bit closer to that all-time .500 mark (339-380). More importantly for him, he appears to now officially be in-line to become the manager of the Phillies in 2014.
Joining Ryno in Philly is Rod Nichols who was named the Phillies' new bullpen coach. Nichols was the IronPigs' pitching coach since Day 1 of the franchise. Despite the lack of success over the first couple of years, the Pigs' pitching staff was pretty consistent. Over five seasons, the staff's ERA was 3.90 ERA under Nichols.
We weren't sure last Fall, but now we know for sure that come Springtime we will see a new manager, the third in IronPigs history, in the third base dugout.
