According to the all-knowing Baseball America Minor League Free Agent Tracker, 32-year-old catcher John Suomi will be back in the Phillies organization this upcoming season. Suomi, splitting time between Reading and Lehigh Valley, played in 18 games with the IronPigs in 2010 and 19 with them in 2011. Last year however he spent the entire season in Allentown where he played in 64 games, hitting .265 with 4 HR and 18 RBI. He did struggle behind the plate where he allowed 7 passed balls and threw out out just 19% of base stealers.
Suomi has long been a favorite of this blog. As with a lot of guys on the IronPigs, the numbers can sometimes be deceiving. Suomi had a bad defensive 2012, but he is a solid catcher who will likely be on the Pigs' Opening Day roster. Plus we get another year of Matt Provence's "Suomi the money!" call and more editions of "Suomi Sundays" on the Service Electric pre-game show.
